in situ | Jon Villoch 4 | extra links!

Our 4th installment of art series, In Situ, once again follows artist Jon (Depoh) Villoch. We've peered in his studio, been invited to his gallery show openings in NYC and seen his on sight murals being created. Above is a remix of the time lapse footage Villoch shot himself of a mural he was completing.

Our third installment of In Situ gets a glimpse of Jon Villoch working on works on paper in his studio. The video fails to capture the electric brilliance of the etching ink being brushed then pallet knifed onto the paper. We were able to see recently created works as well as watching Villoch work on some pieces live.

Well, if you haven't watched the video above then I guess we're not friends anymore, I mean, I'll just tell you right now. Blain is a supremely talented traceur. Ok... I get it. You still have questions. What's a traceur? Will you just give me a second to tell you?! Stop rushing me! Just kidding. Someone who trains in the French born discipline of parkour is, in turn, a traceur. There! Happy?! Jon "Depoe" Villoch and I go way back. I've seen him go from a graffiti artist bombing up the streets of Miami to an exhibiting NYC artist with paintings in many prestigious private collections. It's all well deserved. "In Situ" was created for Jon as a way for us to be the fly on the wall while he creates new work. We follow him on location when he's doing a commissioned mural to sitting in his studio while he works on new paintings, etchings and prints. This is the second video in the series, not counting our interview with him a couple of years back, and there's a few more in the works that will be coming out soon. The videos are quiet and mostly about watching Jon work and taking in his process. It's DEPOE day at AVideoMagazine!

Jon Villoch, an old friend of mine, is also a strong supporter of the mag helping us out at every turn with great content. I've seen Jon go from being a traditional graffiti artist to one of the most thrilling street artists out there.

He holds a bunch of exhibitions and commissions, both legal and not, under his belt making him quite the prolific artist. His studios are surrounded by it and the volume of his work speaks to someone undeniably in love with his craft. His latest works, pictured in his flickr account, shows how his art works on a massive scale as well as the macro when you stop to enjoy the minute details of his work.

I'm proud to say we're launching an ongoing video segment for AVideoMagazine chronicling the creation of some never before seen works. Great work Jon! Holla atcha boy! ;)

Building the Sharan Pinhole Camera | extra links!

This awesome little kit was purchased at a high end Japanese boutique on Madison in the fifties. You know, near Montblanc but closer to the park? Riiiiiight. No but seriously, it was only 25 bucks - 'bout the only thing your homie could afford up in there! -fist bump-

Here's the link/s you've been waiting for!!! And with good reason because though you may have already searched and found the camera featured in the video above... I FOUND MORE STUFF THAN YOU!! Stuff I didn't know they had! Look at me, all reporter-y hunting down a story for you. I'm totes getting the square one.

Remember kids, this is a film project so you might not get the best pictures right away. My suggestion is to shoot a test roll of film... ok hold on, I have a list of steps.

Step 1: on a normalish/bright day go out with your camera and place it somewhere steady making sure there's something in the foreground, mid and background for comparison later.

Step B: keeping an eye on the time, expose your very first photo for 1 second. Then take your second shot for 2 seconds then 4 then 6 then 8 and so on until you reach 30 seconds without ever moving the camera. Use the rest of your roll of film to experiment with different times, double exposures, movement - all that arty shit you wanted to do with it in the first place. You just bought AND built a cardboard camera remember?! XD

Step III: after you develop the film your first 15 shots will serve as a visual guide of what exposure time you should use on a regular day and what effects the different times give you. You'll be able to shoot relatively freely afterwards and if it's a cloudy day just double the time or eye ball it. As you shoot more you'll hone that.

Note: If you have very bright streaks of light ruining your photos then there's a light leak in the camera. Buy that cloth-like black tape and tape up the seams. That should help. If the light leaks are slight it could be stylish but if it's ruining everything then you should totes tape it. Also, there's some great notes at the Sharan website about exposure times with photo examples here.

Once we revealed our new site one reader noticed that in the redesign there was also a bit of editing. Very true. A small amount of videos were cut from the latest look of the site. Since I've always cringed and audibly said "wtf?" every time I've watched the videos in question, they were cut. But for those of you wanting a quick and easy way at them through the site just visit the funny+wtf section here on the blog. Enjoy, you perverse little creatures. ;)
